Interview Tips!

Following up to my Resume writing tips, here are some tips to nail your interview!

Today's employment landscape is highly competitive, to land an interview means you have something that they liked on your resume, now is your chance to show what you're made of!

DO's
-Dress professionally, this is not an old fashioned suggestion this is what you must do to be perceived as serious and professional for the job, whether the culture allows for blue jeans or is business professional, you should dress professionally.
-Bring extra copies of your resume and references in a folder or padfolio, do not assume that they have your resume already
-Come prepared with knowledge of the company, recent news clips, a good understanding of what the company does, their history, key executives, etc. this shows that you did your homework.
-Know the job description inside and out and have examples prepared that focus on how you have demonstrated your abilities in the past relevant to the job.
-Use the STAR format in answering all questions - Situation, Task, Action, Result.
-Practice! Rehearse answers to situational/behavioral based interview questions, odds are they are going to ask you.
-Show up early, allow yourself time to decompress, straighten your outfit, go to restroom, time to park, etc.

DON'T
-Bring a resume that you have folded in half and is in your pocket
-Show up late
-Use casual language, be professional
-Overdo it, be yourself, be honest
-Talk bad about previous employers, even if you feel strongly about a former employer talking poorly about them reflects very negatively on your professionalism.
-Slouch or other lazy type of posture, sit up straight.

The biggest things I can stress are preparing yourself to be successful in the interview, practice answering questions, think of specific situations that reflect on your skills. Be confident and make sure to ask for business cards of who you interview with so you can send a hand written thank you following the interview. Don't be afraid to ask for the job or at least ask what the next steps will be and when you will hear back.

Be confident, you CAN DO IT!

Let Your Light Shine!

I heard this in my yoga sculpt teacher training last weekend and wanted to share!

Tiny Wisdom: Let Your Light Shine Bright
by Lori Deschene
“As we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same.” -Marianne Williamson
We all have it: a little voice inside that tries to hold us back.
It tells us not to say what we feel so we won’t make any waves. It tells us not to define what we want so that things can stay predictably easy. It tells us not to go for our dreams because we may not be good enough.
It may also tell us that it’s selfish to focus on our own desires and goals–that good people are more concerned with giving than getting. But giving and receiving are two sides of the same coin. And sometimes the best thing we can give to others is a reminder that we all deserve to live passionate, fulfilling, engaged lives–and we all have the capacity to do it.
So today, let your light shine.
Make your own needs and wants priorities.
Make time for the things you love to do, even if they feel silly, or superficial, or extravagant. If it’s within your means to do it and it doesn’t hurt anyone, don’t worry about justifying–just enjoy!
Use your gifts and talents in the way you want to use them–not the way you think you should.
Speak directly from your heart, without fear of reproach.
If you believe in something, stand behind it, even if you stand alone.
Keep your heart open to the world around you so you can be moved and inspired–and then use that internal illumination to create something that will move and inspire the people around you.
Play. Laugh. Love. Leap. And remember that you have nothing to prove. There’s nothing you have to do, and there’s no one you have to be other than exactly who you are, because who you are is beautiful. Who you are is full of light–and the world deserves to see it.

It's the little things....

There have been a few instances lately where I have found myself extremely happy or my mood has changed for the better based on some of the littlest things, so this is just my thought, what are some of the little things in life that just make you happy? Here's some for me:

-when you finally grasp something that you have been struggling with, like counting music! :)
-a light, warm rain in March in MN
-peanut butter M & M's
-kudos for a job well done
-lots of happy birthday wishes from your facebook friends
-when my cat actually cuddles
-a good book
-hugs
-kisses
-friends
-laughs
-pictures
This list could go on forever!!!

I appreciate the little things that make me happy, take some time to think about what makes you happy?

Peace and Love.

Resume Tips!

Today I thought I would share some tips to those out there on the job search or those looking to work on their resume! After a couple years in the recruiting industry I have reviewed 1000's of resumes! There are a couple of things that drive me nuts as well as some best practices I would like to share so here is my list of DO's and DONT's for resumes! Enjoy!

DO:
  • Cater the resume, objective and cover letter if you are including one TO THE POSITION!!
  • Make sure you spellcheck, your resume should look BEAUTIFUL. Make sure the size, font, spacing is all the same.
  • Use specific examples of things you have accomplished at each position, a few bullet points is enough.
  • Make sure you include anything relevant, and take anything not relevant off the resume.
  • This is your chance to sell yourself on why you are the best for the position, make yourself LOOK GOOD!
  • Include specific dates of employment (April 2006-June 2010) is far better and does not shoot up a red flag like 2009-2010 does for all I know you worked there December 2009-January 2010, that is not the assumption you want them to make.

DONT:
  • Use words like "spearheaded" in every bullet point
  • Use the same resume for every position, especially don't leave the previous job/company you applied!
  • Apply for every position on the company's website, read the job description, are you qualified? could you do the job?, if yes, then apply.
  • Use a silly email address you created for fun like sparkles123@hotmail.com, create a professional email specifically for job searching.
  • Write your resume in a paragraph, this is hard to read and more than likely the reviewer will not read it all.
That is all I have for tips right now!!

Motivation

Without inspiration the best powers of the mind remain dormant. There is a fuel in us which needs to be ignited with sparks.
Johann Gottfried Von Herder

It has been a tough week for me in regards to finding my motivation to get to the gym, however I have made it there Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday and am reaping the benefits through sore muscles :) I liked this quote, we have to fuel our fire!

Inspiration

This morning I attended an event that our VP was speaking at regarding "Building your Brand." This was a great presentation done by an exceptional public speaker, and the best thing...it got me thinking. It got me thinking about what inspires me, what do I enjoy most, what drives me, what is my passion and how do I incorporate these things into my work/life balance as well as what am I doing to continue to build my brand and build upon what I hope to be. SO with these thoughts in mind, I encourage you to think about and ask yourself those same questions listed above. Are you doing what you love? If you're not, change it!! It's never to late to change your mind. That is the power we have as human beings, as adults. The only thing holding us back is ourselves! Get out there and inspire someone today to strive to be the best they can be! Cheers!
